Our Commitment to HIV/AIDS
Related to country: Thailand

Uniquely, WHITELOVE was found by a group of local Thai young people as a non-profit organization working to promote an environmentally healthy, just, and peaceful world.
HIV/AIDS is one of our focus in our strategic plan. Thailand today has an estimate of two million people infected with HIV/AIDS (or 1.8 percent of the population), and the situation is worst among young adults. Northern Thailand is severely affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Some reports have stated that up to 40% of the reported AIDS cases in Thailand are in the northern region. Particularly hard hit are the provinces in the upper north; Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, and Payao. In Chiang Mai life expectancy is five years less than it would have been without HIV.
In 2001 it was estimated that 290,000 children had been orphaned by AIDS and that approximately 2,000 HIV infected children were born annually. Estimations talks about a total of 1,200,000 orphaned children in Thailand 2005. It is not clear how many of these who are orphaned by AIDS but it can be presumed to be a significant number. According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) all children have the right to be free from discrimination of any kind, irrespective of the child is own, or their parentis or guardian is status. But children affected by HIV are always at risk of discrimination. For this reason the principle of non-discrimination is highly relevant in efforts to improve the lives and development of these children. In addition, when parents are known to have HIV or have died from AIDS the children are often also perceived to be infected with HIV, even when this is not the case. Not only members of the community, but in some cases also the extended family members ostracize these children.
